Why Your State Sucks – ouch!

Ouch! Talk about cutting to the quick. TIME magazine has an article “Why Your State Sucks: The Great American Map of Fail” with a map of the 50 states and one simple fact about them. The thing is, the fact is something awful about each state! Having lived in Massachusetts for 13 years, it comes as no surprise that we’re famous (notorious?) for bad drivers. And it should be no surprise to anyone that Hawaii is the most expensive place to live.

Some of them are quite ironic. California with the dirtiest air (I said ironic, not bewildering) and Utah with highest porn usage (and all those Mormons, many of whom are not even supposed to own radios or TVs!).

But Rhode Island with the most drug use? Washington and bestiality? (How do you even begin to measure that? never mind, I don’t really want to know.) Maine the dumbest? But I think the most shocking ones are tornadoes in Minnesota and ugly people in North Dakota. I can’t recall ever hearing of a tornado in Minnesota. Blizzards, yet, but tornadoes? Actually, I’ve never heard that North Dakota is brimming with ugly people either.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is no more

“By ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ no longer will our nation be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans forced to leave the military, despite years of exemplary performance, because they happen to be gay,” Mr. Obama said in a statement after the cloture vote. “And no longer will many thousands more be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love.” – as quoted in the New York Times.

How wonderful is this news!? Now gay people can serve in the military, just like everyone else.

Next up: let’s let them marry as well!

An immortal being

According to Bryan Nelson, of the Mother Nature Network, an immortal animal has been discovered. I am strangely fascinated and yet repulsed at the same time. Not that I am anything spectacular to look at, nor do I make much effort to look at myself that often, but I wonder…if I looked like that, would I want to live forever?

And they’re invading oceans all over the world? This sounds more like a sci-fi movie than a nature article!

Of course, I would never friend my own daughter, so I moved on to ignore it. Then what? Another suggestion, this time with both kids!

I’m not sure why I find this so amusing, but I do! I wonder if the girls do?

firefox bookmarks frozen search results

I was actually googling “firefox bookmarks frozen” because I can’t add or reorder any of my bookmarks in Firefox, and I desperately want to bookmark some CDs I have been listening to through my Naxos subscription. I didn’t find any useful information, but I did see a line “Firefox has been frozen by your add-on.” in the search results. Even though the site was something I’ve never heard of (MyProps.org), it didn’t have google’s warning about being a spyware site, so I clicked on it. The article in question turned out to be just a link to another site, which turned out to be a photo gallery from the Telegraph (UK): “A tight spot: the silly animals that found themselves a bit stuck“. Great photos! Except the one with the six-week-old fox cub; that one was very sad. Thank goodness someone found the cub before it died. Of course, I still can’t add bookmarks.

I don’t normally agree with Barney Frank, but this time, he did and said everything perfectly!

Way to go, Barney! Now if only more can speak up against misconceptions and flat-out lies and propaganda.

lessons of the month

This month has flown right by, but not without some learning experiences. Here are some things I learned:

Never give Schrödie flea medicine while wearing a decent shirt; she still has back claws.

There is a limit as to how much milk one can ingest in the span of three minutes.

High school kids that play in pit bands are really cool.

The Comfort Inn is not that comfortable.

It can take 50 minutes to drive 5 miles when there is night construction on I-95.

Always make a backup of a database table before you do anything to it.

Agatha Christie is still a good read.

Some vampire cable shows should never have been made.
